the Cambridge ladies who live in furnished souls
are unbeautiful and have comfortable minds
(also, with the church's protestant blessings
daughters, unscented shapeless spirited)
they believe in Christ and Longfellow, both dead,
are invariably interested in so many things —
at the present writing one still finds
delighted fingers knitting for the is it Poles?
perhaps. While permanent faces coyly bandy
scandal of Mrs. N and Professor D
....the Cambridge ladies do not care, above
Cambridge if sometimes in its box of
sky lavender and cornerless, the
moon rattles like a fragment of angry candy

as damas de Cambridge que moram em almas mobiliadas
são desbotadas a têm mentes confortáveis
(também,com as bênçãos protestantes das igrejas
filhas,inodoras informes devotadas)
crêem em Cristo a Longfellow, ambos mortos,
têm invariável interesse em tantas coisas —
à hora em que escrevo ainda se encontram
dedos dedicados costurando para... poloneses?
talvez. Enquanto rictos rígidos escandem
o escândalo da Sra. N e do Professor D
...as damas de Cambridge nem se tocam, se
sobre Cambridge às vezes em sua caixa de
céu 1avanda a redonda,a lua brande
um furioso torrão de açúcar-cande

"next to of course god america i
love you land of the pilgrims' and so forth oh
say can you see by the dawn's early my
country 'tis of centuries come and go
and are no more what of it we should worry
in every language even deafanddumb
thy sons acclaim your glorious name by gorry
by jingo by gee by gosh by gum
why talk of beauty what could be more beaut-
iful than these heroic happy dead
who rushed like lions to the roaring slaughter
they did not stop to think they died instead
then shall the voice of liberty be mute?"

He spoke. And drank rapidly a glass of water

"depois de é claro deus américa eu
to amo ó pátria amada idolatrada etc não
viram do ipiranga as margens?em teu
formoso céu o dia sec'los vêm a vão

Falou. E esvaziou rápido um copo d'água

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a far better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
— the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are for eachother: then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis

3

já que sentir vem antes
quem prestar atenção
à sintaxe das coisas
nunca te beijará completamente;

ser totalmente louco
quando há Primavera

meu sangue aprova,
a beijos são melhor destino
que sabedoria
dama eu,juro por todas as flores. Não chores
— o melhor gesto do meu cérebro é menos que
o tremer de tuas pálpebras que diz

que somos um para o outro: então
ri, sem medo, em meus braços
pois a vida não é nenhum parágrafo

E a morte (eu acho) náo é nenhum parêntese

(dreams hopes despairs)

Once
    happened
nowhere else
imagine
       Now

rapidly this

(a
  forest has slowly
Murdered the House)
hole swallows it
                  self

while nobody

(and stars moon

go rain snow)

remembers

(sonhos esperanças desesperos)

Uma vez
       aconteceu
em nenhum outro lugar

       Agora

rapidamente esta

(uma
    floresta lentamente
Assassinou a Casa)
cova se engole a si
                   mesma

enquanto ninguém

(e estrelas lua

why from this her and him
did you and did i climb
(crazily kissing)till

into themselves we fell —

how have all time and space
bowed to inmortal us
if in one little bed

she and he lie(undead)

6

por que deste ela a ele
você a eu subimos
(num beijo insano)até

que emmesmos recaímos —

como é que o tempo e o espaço
(a) i (nós) mortais fazem
se num estreito leito

ela e ele(amortos)jazem

out of the lie of no
rises a truth of yes
(only herself and who
illimitably is)

making fools understand
(like wintry me)that not
all matterings of mind
equal one violet

7

da mentira do não
a verdade do sim
(só ela mesma e quem
é ilimitadamente)

para que um tolo entenda
(como triste eu)que nem
mil meandros da mente
valem uma violeta
